Difference Between Flange Adapter and Flange Reducer
2026-09-15 03:22:59
Flange adapter and flange reducer are both flange related pipeline fittings, but their core functions differ significantly.Flange adapter is mainly used to convert pipe end connection form, such as changing grooved, plain or threaded pipe end into flange interface. It generally keeps the same nominal diameter at both sides.Flange reducer, also known as reducing flange,is used to connect two flanges of different nominal diameters for pipeline diameter transition.
In engineering practice, users often confuse these two fittings during procurement. If diameter change and connection conversion are required simultaneously, combined fittings or two separate components need to be selected.Using flange adapter to realize pipe diameter reduction will cause unreasonable flow pattern and extra stress concentration.Using flange reducer for pipe end conversion cannot solve the mismatch of connection types.
Flange adapter focuses on connection transition and disassembly convenience.Flange reducer focuses on flow cross section change.Their pressure rating selection and installation requirements also have differences. For flange reducer, flow turbulence and pressure loss caused by diameter change need to be considered in hydraulic calculation.
Designers and maintenance teams need to clarify the function difference before purchasing fittings.Correct selection avoids assembly failure and hidden leakage risks.Understanding the distinction helps engineers choose proper flange fittings for new construction, maintenance and pipeline retrofit projects.
