Common Leakage Causes and Maintenance of Flange Adapter Joint

Flange adapter joints are typical leakage prone positions in piping systems.Common root causes include poor parallel alignment of flange faces,insufficient or uneven bolt torque,damaged or ageing gaskets and corrosion defects on flange sealing surfaces.During installation,residual dirt and burrs between flange faces will cut the gasket and form leakage channels.

Gasket ageing occurs gradually in long term service.Elastomer materials lose elasticity under continuous compression,high temperature or chemical attack,leading to sealing force decline.Flange faces may suffer rust and pitting corrosion in humid environment,destroying the smooth sealing surface.Pipeline vibration will induce bolt stress relaxation and reduce preload over time.

Preventive maintenance starts with periodic visual inspection to check seepage traces,rust and bolt condition.Minor seepage cannot be solved by simply tightening bolts blindly,because excessive torque may crack the flange or crush gasket.The correct solution is to depressurize the pipeline,disassemble flange joint,clean flange faces and replace the gasket.

After reassembly,cross sequence bolt tightening and pressure test are required.For pipelines with strong vibration,inspection intervals should be shortened.Good maintenance management effectively reduces unexpected leakage and improves the reliability of flange adapter connections in fluid piping systems.
